The image and symbolism of the card

A figure stands on a height, with their back to us, looking at the sea. Ships are sailing into the distance on the water. Three wands stand around them: they hold one, the other two stand in the ground by themselves.

This card is no longer about the decision. The decision has been made, the ships are on their way. Now comes what is often the most difficult part: waiting.

Standing with one's back turned

The figure is not looking at us, but forward. This is deliberate: this card does not explain and does not look back. Once you have started something, you must stop deliberating after a while, otherwise nothing will ever reach the other shore.

Standing with one's back turned also means that we do not see their face – we do not know if they are anxious or calm. This is up to you. The quality of your waiting is your decision.

The three wands

They hold one wand, the other two stand by themselves. This is the most beautiful detail of this card: what has started is already moving without you. You don't have to hold it, you don't have to push it, you don't have to check it every day.

The tarot here states a very simple thing: there are times when the most you can do is not touch it.

The ships and the sea

The sea is opportunity, the ships are what you have set in motion: an idea, an inquiry, an application, a request, a conversation. These are now not dependent on you.

The ships are slower than we would like. This is not a fault, but the nature of things. What you have lovingly and well set in motion will arrive – just not when you would find it convenient.

The height

The figure stands higher than where things are happening. This is one of the teachings of this card: whoever goes higher sees more. Getting stuck is often not a lack of effort, but a lack of perspective.

If something is unclear, it rarely helps to lean closer. Much more often, it helps to step back.

The shadow side

The shadow of this card is impatience: when someone digs up the seed to see if it's growing. Constant follow-up, rewritten messages, modified plans all do the same thing – they don't speed up the ship, they just disrupt its direction.

The other shadow is idle waiting, which disguises fear as waiting. Patience is not the same as doing nothing: patience knows what it is waiting for.

The number three

The number three in the tarot is the first tangible result. The spark appeared in the Ace, the plan was born in the Two, and in the Three, something is already visible in the world. Not the full harvest – just the first sprout.

Therefore, it should not be confused with arrival. Those who stop and celebrate at the Three often do not reach the Ten. The first result is not a goal, but feedback: it tells you that you are going in the right direction, keep going.

And the reverse is also true. If you don't see results now, it doesn't mean there aren't any. The ships are still moving beyond the horizon, they just can't be seen from there.
