The Card's Image and Symbolism
A master sits on a bench, hammer in hand, carving a coin. Beside him, on the pillar, five finished coins are already lined up; one is at his feet, and he is currently carving another.
In the background, far away, is a city. Small. Distant.
He sits with his back to it.
This card carries the least spectacular, yet most important message of the entire deck: something will only be good if you do it eight times.
Repetition
Look at the finished coins. They are not different. The same pattern, again and again.
This card is not about inspiration. It's about repetition. About sitting down and doing it – even if you don't feel like it, even if no one is watching, even if the fifth one is the same as the fourth.
Talent is cheap. Everyone knows talented people who never amounted to anything. What is expensive is someone doing the same thing eight times.
The Seven and the Eight
On the previous card, this person was leaning on a hoe, asking: is it worth it? Here, he no longer asks. He works.
This is the difference between the two: the Seven thinks, the Eight does. And the truth is, you cannot think your way out of doubt. You can only work your way out.
Whoever waits for enthusiasm to arrive first, and only then begins to work, will wait forever. It works the other way around: work brings the mood, not the mood the work.
The City in the Background
This is the most sensitive detail of this card.
There is the city. People, life, noise, recognition. And he sits with his back to it.
This is the price. Whoever truly learns something misses out on things. Does not go everywhere. Does not see everything. There is a phase in life – sometimes years – when you sit on the bench while others are in the city.
This card says: this is okay. This is not a missed life. This is the price of mastery, and it is worth it.
But it also says: you must stand up eventually. The eight is not an eternal state. Forgetting to return to the city turns one's craft into a refuge.
What is Not Seen
There is no success in the picture. No money, no recognition, no audience. Just coins, on a bench.
This is the stage no one posts about. When nothing has come of it yet, you just keep doing it. When everyone asks when something will come of this, and you have no good answer.
This card now tells you: you are in the right place. This is what it looks like from the inside.
The Shadow
In a reversed position, two things can happen.
One: weariness. You no longer love it, you just do it. The quality quietly begins to deteriorate, and you don't notice because you are no longer paying attention. At such times, you don't need more work, but a break.
The other: perfectionism. You are not carving the sixth coin – you are carving the same one for the sixth month. At some point, perfecting becomes an escape from releasing your work. Because as long as it's with you, it can still be perfect.
The Card's Request
Today, don't invent anything new.
Do what you did yesterday. Then again tomorrow. You don't need inspiration. You need a bench, a hammer, and two hours that no one shares with you.
