The Image and Symbolism of the Card
A mighty wheel spins in the sky, with letters and secret symbols running around its rim, and its spokes radiating from the center.
At the top of the wheel sits a blue sphinx, holding a sword, motionless; on its right side, a dog-headed figure scrambles upwards, and on its left side, a snake slides downwards.
In the four corners, four winged figures sit on clouds — an angel, an eagle, a lion, and a bull — and all four are reading books.
And notice the most important thing: they are not looking at the wheel.
The Four Figures in the Corners
This is the greatest secret of this card, and almost everyone overlooks it: the wheel turns, good fortune comes and bad fortune comes, everything fluctuates — and the figures sitting in the four corners are reading.
They are not anxious, they are not betting, they are not cheering, and they are not lamenting. They just keep reading, just as they did yesterday.
This entire card in one sentence: the wheel will turn, whether you watch it or not — the only question is whether there is something within you that does not turn in the meantime.
The Snake and the Upward Climber
Look at the two sides of the wheel: on one side, someone is going up, on the other, someone is sliding down — and now pay attention, because this is the essence: simultaneously.
It's not that good comes first, then bad. Both are always happening, every moment, you just happen to see one more clearly.
And this is also the comfort of this card: if you feel like you are sliding down now, then on the other side of the wheel, something is already rising in your life that you don't know about yet — because the wheel cannot turn with only one half moving.
The Sphinx at the Top
At the top of the wheel sits a sphinx, the same creature that was harnessed to the Chariot — only there it was pulling the chariot, and here it is sitting, sword in hand, motionless.
And this is no accident: the sphinx poses a riddle, and whoever solves it sits at the top. Those who don't understand what is happening to them are carried by the wheel; those who understand sit at the top and do not fall, because they are not clinging.
The sword in its hand is for discernment: it cuts apart what is truly happening and what you imagine to be happening — and almost always, the latter hurts more.
