FIVE OF CUPS – vocation

The Five of Cups in career is a card of failure and disappointment.

Something didn't work out. A project failed, you didn't get a job, a business didn't take off, a promotion went to someone else. And now you're looking at the spilled cups.

This card doesn't sweep away the disappointment. Professional failure hurts so much because most of us tie our self-worth to our performance. When something doesn't succeed – it's not just the project that fails – but a small piece of who we thought we were.

But there are the two cups behind you. In your career, this means: your knowledge isn't lost. Your experience has stayed with you. Your connections are still there. A failed project doesn't erase your ten years.

And there's an important difference here. Learning and self-flagellation are not the same thing. One moves you forward, the other paralyzes you. Ask yourself: what did I learn from this? If there's an answer, then it wasn't a failure, but tuition.

But don't rush this either. There's a false professional culture that says failure should be celebrated immediately as a learning opportunity. It doesn't have to be. It's okay for it to hurt first.

Its shadow, which is good news: you'll move on. You won't forget it – you'll integrate it.

The angels send this message: you are not your failure.

If something has failed now, it's not about you. This sentence is hard to swallow because in our professional lives we’ve learned that the outcome is us. We are not.

It's okay for it to hurt. Don't jump straight to the lessons. First, just let it be. A day or two. Then comes the analysis.

Then turn around. Behind you stand two chalices: everything you know, everyone you know, everything you have already done. These are still there. You can build anew from these.

Ask yourself: what did I learn? If there is an answer, then this was not a loss, but an investment. If there isn't, then keep looking – but gently, without accusation.

Do not rewrite your story based on a failure. Most successful careers are full of points that everyone at the time thought were the end.

And ask for help. Talk about it with someone from your profession. You will be surprised how many have exactly such a story.

If the card reaches you in reverse: you move on. Suddenly you have an idea again, and you don’t even think about what was.
