The Image and Symbolism of the Card

A figure with a deer's body, a goat's head, and bat wings squats on a black stone block, an inverted five-pointed star on its forehead. Its right hand is raised in a blessing, and its left hand holds a torch — pointed downwards.

Two naked people are chained to the stone block, a man and a woman. Both have small horns growing, and both have tails: the man's is burning with fire, and the woman's ends in a bunch of grapes.

And now, observe the most important detail, for the entire card hinges on it: the chains around their necks are loose. Ample. They could easily lift their heads out of them.

These are the same two people

Look at them again, and also look at The Lovers card: it's the same man and the same woman, just as naked, in the same posture.

There, an angel hovered above them. Here, a goat-headed figure squats.

They haven't changed. What has changed is what they are looking at — and this is the card's harshest truth: the same love, the same appetite, the same passion can be wings or chains, depending on what is above it.

The devil does not come from outside. He only moves into places where you no longer look up.

The chain is loose

This is the secret of this card: no one forced it upon them. The chain is loose, their necks fit comfortably within it, and two movements would set them free.

They don't do it. And not because the chains are strong — but because they are not looking there.

The Hanged Man also hung by a single ankle, with free hands, but he knew he was hanging and chose it. These two do not know. This is the difference between a conscious pause and addiction: one sees the rope, the other has already forgotten it's there.

If you now feel that something is holding you captive — a habit, a relationship, a substance, a job — then the first question of the card is not how to break free. It's when you last looked at it.

The torch points downwards

Do you remember the Hermit? He held a lantern, with a star inside, and held it forward, outwards, into the darkness: he wasn't lighting his own way.

This figure holds a torch and turns it downwards — specifically, in such a way that it ignites the man's tail.

This is one of the most accurate images of the card: whoever seduces you does not light your way. They set you on fire.

And the most beautiful revelation of what this all is, is that the flame ignites on its own follower — it gives nothing, it only makes you believe that what it burns within you is your own fire.

The hand raised in blessing

Observe its right hand: it is raised in blessing, exactly like the Hierophant.

Only the Hierophant's hand was permeable — two fingers up, two down, to pass on what he received from above. This hand passes on nothing. This gesture is empty: the form is there, the content is not.

This is what all false authority, all false promises, all false comfort look like: exactly like the real thing.

The half cube

It sits on a black stone block, which is only half a cube — the other half is not there.

This is the sign of half-truth: what the Devil says is never a lie. Only half of it.

"You deserve it." True. "This would feel good now." True. "You only live once." True. What is missing from it is the other half of the cube: that tomorrow morning, you will still be the one who wakes up.

The two tails

Look at the two people again, because their tails are not the same: the man's is burning with fire, the woman's ends in a bunch of grapes.

Fire and grapes — passion and intoxication: the two oldest chains, and both are made of good things. Neither of them is bad. Only when they grow out of you, and not you out of them — that's when it becomes a tail.

The inverted star

On its forehead, a five-pointed star shines, turned upside down — and this inversion is everything: what is usually up is not up.

When desire decides and the head obeys, then the star stands upside down. It's not that desiring is the problem — but if desire sits on the throne.

Capricorn and the number fifteen

This card belongs to Capricorn and the Earth element: to matter, to the body, to possession — this card is not about spirits, but about very tangible things.

And matter is not the devil. Matter is good: food, money, the body, desire are all good. What becomes a chain is that above which there is nothing left.

The Shadow

Reversed, this card is the best news in the deck: the reversed Devil is liberation — that moment when someone looks up, sees the chain, and realizes it's loose.

Its second shadow is self-deception: "I could stop anytime." Anyone who says this has never tried.

And the third is shame, which is the most cunning trap: shame looks downwards. And as long as you look downwards, you won't see what lies beyond the chain.
