The Image and Symbolism of the Card
A red heart, pierced by three swords. Behind it, a gray cloud, and rain is pouring. There is no person on the card. No face, no body, no story – just the heart, the three blades, and the rain.
This is the most honest image in tarot. It does not adorn, does not explain, does not comfort. It does not say that things will get better. It only says: it hurts. And in this lies its peculiar grace.
Because when someone is in great pain, the worst thing we can do to them is to start explaining. That "everything happens for a reason." That "one door closes, another opens." The Three of Swords does not do this. It sits beside you and says nothing. It just stays there while it rains.
Why three swords?
One would be enough. But there are three. Because heartbreak is never made of one piece.
The first sword is the loss itself. What happened. The fact.
The second is what your head does with it: the replayed scenes, the sentence you should have said, the three o'clock in the morning moments. This sword stems from the suit's color – Swords are the element of air, of thought. It's not just what happened that hurts. It's also how you tell it to yourself again and again.
The third sword is the deepest: what you believe about yourself in the process. That you weren't enough. That it's your fault. That this will always happen to you.
You cannot pull out the first sword. You can pull out the second and third.
The Rain
The rain on this card is not punishment. It cleanses. Water is feeling – and this is the only element in the image that moves.
This card asks you to do something no one usually does: to let it rain. Don't stop it. Don't suppress it. Don't say you have to be strong. Tears have a purpose. The feeling you don't experience doesn't disappear – it just sinks to the bottom of your heart and controls you from there.
The rain will stop. All rain stops. But only after it has begun.
The Truth That Cuts
The Three of Swords often isn't about feeling, but about a truth discovered. A sentence you shouldn't have heard – or which it's good you heard. A betrayal. A realization that something hasn't been what you thought it was for a long time.
And here comes the card's harsh gift: this pain is not from the truth. It's because the lie covered it until now. The truth only showed what was there all along.
The Open Heart
Notice: the heart is open. Not armored. Not closed off. The swords reached it precisely because it loved.
This is the ultimate teaching of this card. It doesn't hurt because you made a mistake. It hurts because you were open. And an open heart is the heart of the brave – even if three blades are now in it.
You don't need to make armor out of it. Armor protects you from the next sword, but it also shuts out everything else.
