The Image and Symbolism of the Card

A man and a woman stand naked in a garden, and above them, a mighty angel emerges from the clouds, with outstretched arms, fiery red wings, and behind them, the sun shines so brightly that one can barely look into it.

Behind the woman stands a tree, around whose trunk a serpent is coiled, and behind the man, another tree, on which, instead of leaves, twelve flames burn, and between them, a single solitary mountain peak rises to the sky.

And observe the most important thing: no one is looking in the same direction. The man looks at the woman, the woman looks up at the angel, and the angel looks at neither of them — but above both of them.

Not "The Love" but "The Lovers"

The name of the card is not accidental, as it bears the name not of an emotion, but of two people: for the emotion comes by itself, but being together is a choice.

And where there are two, there is always a choice — not just once, at the beginning, solemnly, but anew every single day: whether you turn to them, whether you listen to them, whether you speak out.

This card appears right after the Hierophant, who brought the ready-made rules, and this order is telling: here comes the first moment when you no longer ask what is expected of you, but what you yourself want.

Who looks at whom

The gazes form a chain, and this is the entire teaching of the card: the man looks at the woman because for him she is the visible — the body, the present, the reality at hand.

The woman, however, looks upwards, at the angel, because she observes what is beyond the relationship, and this is the essence of ancient teaching: the conscious mind does not directly reach heaven, only through the heart.

There is something beautiful and something unsettling in this at the same time — that the one you love always looks at something you don't see, and this cannot be eliminated, only respected.

The Two Trees

Behind the woman stands the tree of knowledge with the serpent, behind the man the tree of flames, with twelve tongues of fire on it — exactly as many as there are months in a year.

The serpent here is not sin: the serpent is that which wants to know, and he who loves will sooner or later learn something about the other that he did not ask for, did not seek, and which cannot be put back where it came from.

And the twelve flames warn that passion is not a constant state, but burns in seasons: there are months when it blazes, and there are times when it only smolders — and he who believes that embers are the end has never lived through an entire year with anyone.

The Air of Gemini

This card belongs to the Air element and the sign of Gemini, that is, to the word: Gemini does not embrace, but speaks.

And this is the most practical message of this card, because a relationship is not kept alive by grand emotions, but by spoken sentences — for what remains unsaid does not cease to exist, it merely sinks down, and from there continues to direct, invisibly.

The Mountain Between Them

Between them, a single mountain rises, but observe where it stands: not in front of them, but behind them, distant, in the background — it does not separate them, because neither of them looks at it.

Yet it is there, and in every love, there is a mountain: that one thing they haven't talked about yet, which they both see if they happen to turn that way, and which they both feel is easier to go around than to climb.

They Have No Armor

The Emperor wore armor under his purple cloak even when no one attacked him — but here there is no armor, no cloak, no anything.

Nakedness on this card is not erotic, but frightening: it means there is nothing to deny, nowhere to retreat, and no sentence with which you could later correct how you appeared.

That is why true intimacy is so rare — not because it is difficult to find someone, but because it is difficult to lay down your armor before someone who has not yet promised anything.

The Shadow

In a reversed position, this card signifies discord: your head and your heart say different things, and you, in the meantime, convince both that the other is right, just so you don't have to choose.

The second shadow is temptation, which is rarely what it seems — the temptation is not that someone else appears, but that you don't have to decide, for as long as you stand on two paths, you don't have to give up either.

And the third is procrastination, and this is the quietest: procrastination is also a decision, only more painful, because it decides for you more slowly.

If this card has come to you now

You know which decision is at stake, and you probably also know what your heart whispers — you are just looking for someone to confirm that you are free.

You are free.

Speak that one sentence today that you have had on the tip of your tongue for months, because most regrets do not come from making a bad decision, but from not making the decision ourselves.
