The Card's Image and Symbolism
A king sits on his throne, out in his garden. On his robes are patterns of grape clusters – not a coat of arms, not a lion, not a sword. Grapes.
In one hand, he holds a scepter, in the other, a coin. Beneath his feet, a bull's head is carved into the throne. Around him is a mature grape arbor, and behind him, his castle.
And notice his face. He is not looking at you. Nor is he looking at his treasures. He just sits, calmly, like one who has already seen everything.
This is the last card of the Earth suit, and the calmest person in the deck.
One Who Is No Longer Afraid
The essence of this card is very simple: he is the only figure in this suit who is no longer afraid.
The Ace still hopes. The Four clings. The Five shivers. The Seven doubts. The Eight toils.
He is beyond all of them. He once had nothing – that is why he sits so calmly. Not because he has much, but because he once lost it all and survived.
Calmness does not come from wealth. It comes from knowing that if it were taken away tomorrow, you would still know how to rebuild it.
The Grapes on His Robes
Why grapes? Why not gold, a sword, a lion?
Because grapes are the one thing that cannot be rushed. You cannot command them to produce wine next year. It takes four years for them to bear fruit, and good wine ages for years afterward.
This man is rich because he understood time. He was not smarter than others. He was more patient.
The Bull on the Throne
The sign of Taurus: the most stubborn, most physical form of Earth.
A bull is not fast. It does not jump. But once it starts moving, it cannot be stopped.
This card conveys this message about power: true strength is not loud. It does not argue, it does not try to prove itself. It is simply there, and it cannot be moved.
The Garden, Not the Hall
Like the Queen, he does not sit in the throne room. He is outside, in the arbor.
This is the ultimate wisdom of the Earth suit: those who are truly wealthy do not sit by their safe. They sit in their garden.
And notice what he holds in his hand: a scepter and one coin. Not ten coins. One. Those who have enough do not need to show off.
The Shadow
In a reversed position, this card shows two things.
One: materialism. When only numbers matter, and you measure every person by how much they are worth. This person, if they harden, is frightening – not evil, just deaf.
The other, more common: control. You hold everything. Not because you have to, but because you trust no one. And in the end, you sit in a vast garden that you tend alone, because you let no one in.
If This Card Has Come to You Now
Two things are requested.
The first: give advice. There is someone around you who is where you were fifteen years ago. Do not keep what you know to yourself. Knowledge that you do not pass on dies with you.
The second: be generous. Not extravagant – generous. This is the difference between a rich person and a wealthy person.
