The Card's Image and Symbolism
There are four knights in this deck. Three of them are galloping: the Knight of Wands in fire, the Knight of Swords in a storm, the Knight of Cups gently trotting.
The Knight of Pentacles stands.
The horse does not move. A black draft horse, heavy, muscular – not a racehorse. All four hooves are on the ground. The knight holds a pentacle in his hand and gazes at it.
Beneath him, plowed earth. Behind him, nothing spectacular.
This is the most boring card in the deck. And that is the highest compliment I can give it.
The Only One Who Arrives
None of the three galloping knights reach their destination in this deck.
The Knight of Wands burns out. The Knight of Swords crashes into something. The Knight of Cups stops halfway, having sensed something.
The Knight of Pentacles arrives. Always. Two years later than anyone expected – but he arrives.
If this card has come to you now, then the message is that what you are doing, you will finish. Not beautifully. Not quickly. Not with anyone applauding you along the way. But you will finish it.
The Horse That Is Not a Racehorse
Look closely at that animal. Heavy, stocky, muscular. This horse was not bred for speed. It was bred for pulling.
This card tells you this about yourself: you are not a sprinter. You are the one who endures. And this quality of yours has been presented throughout your life as if it were a shortcoming. You are slow. You are not dynamic enough. You are not spontaneous enough.
No. You pull. That's different.
The Pentacle in His Hand
The other knights hold weapons, or raise a cup. This man holds a pentacle and gazes at it.
He does not wave it. He does not proclaim it. He gazes at it.
This is the image of focus: there is one thing in his hand, and he looks at it. Not seven. One. This is why he arrives – he is not faster because he is better, but because he does not look away.
The Boredom
And now, the shadow side of the card, for it has one.
This card is boring. The same day, the same plowing, the same routine. And at some point, you no longer know if you are doing it because you want to, or because it is your habit.
Reliability has a very quiet price: no one ever asks if you want to. You will be there. Everyone knows you will be there. They don't even have to think about you anymore.
In a reversed position, this card signifies stagnation: the horse that stands still and no longer even starts. The routine that leads nowhere, just goes in circles.
If This Card Has Come to You Now
There are two messages in it, and you need to hear both.
The first: don't give up. You will get there. You are not imagining things, you are not doing it in vain, you are not foolish for still pushing through this. Endure. This is your weapon, and very few people possess it.
The second: let in a little freshness. It's the same plowing, but change your route. Do something this week that makes no sense, has no return, involves no progress.
Even a horse deserves a day to graze.
