The Eight of Cups in a career is the card of the golden cage.

You have a good job. They pay well, your colleagues are nice, no one bothers you. Eight cups, neatly arranged. And every morning it gets a little harder to go in.

This card knows this situation best. It's not about a bad workplace – it's easy to leave those. It's hard to leave a good one. Because if you leave, everyone will ask: are you crazy? Do you know how many people would love to be in your shoes?

And it's true. That's the hardest part. You can't defend your decision because you have no argument. There's just one lack: the spot for the eighth cup is empty, and that's the very one missing that would give meaning to the whole thing.

The card tells an important truth: security is not free. You pay its price with time, and the bill only comes years later – when you realize you've spent ten years on something that wasn't yours.

But there's another side to it worth looking at. This card doesn't always tell you to quit. Sometimes it just means: something is missing, and find out what it is. Sometimes it's not the job that needs changing, but the role, the team, or how you do it.

And a candid warning: if someone moves on from everywhere every two or three years with the same feeling, then it's not the jobs that are lacking. Then the gap indicates something else.

Its shadow: the postponed change. When someone has known for years, and every January says: this year.

Boodschap

The angels send this message: you are free to leave a place that is good, if it is not yours.

It doesn't have to be bad. You don't have to wait for it to become unbearable. Most people wait for this – and in the meantime, ten years pass.

Don't try to explain it away. You can't list reasons, because there aren't any. There is a lack. That is reason enough, and you owe no one an explanation for it.

But don't just run away. Ask yourself: what is that eighth cup? What is it that's missing? If you can name it, then you will know what you are looking for – and not just what you are leaving behind.

See if it's really the job. Sometimes the profession isn't what's lacking, just the place. Or the role. Or the fact that you've been doing the same thing for years. Before you quit, ask yourself: could it be different here?

Prepare yourself. The mountain goes up, and it's night. Don't start out with nothing beneath you. Letting go is courage; unpreparedness is not.

And if the card arrives in shadow: if you're afraid to step out; if the golden cage is comfortable; if you postpone it every year – I won't scold you. Just ask yourself this question: if I'm still sitting here in five years, will it be good? If the answer is no, then you know.
