In work, The Hierophant is the card of transmitting a craft, meaning knowledge that cannot be learned from books, but only from someone else.

Look closely at the image, where a hierophant sits between two stone pillars, two monks kneel before him, and two keys lie crossed at his feet — and notice that the keys are not in his hands, but on the ground, because this person does not own the door, but merely guards what is behind it.

This card can speak to you in two ways. Either you are a disciple, and then it asks you to find someone who has already been where you are going, because what you are struggling with now has already happened to someone: someone has already messed it up, someone has already burned their hand on the same handle, and a truth discovered on your own is just as true, only years more expensive.

Or you are already the hierophant, even if you don't call yourself that: there is someone in your team who is now where you were fifteen years ago, and who will fall into the same mistake you did — and the knowledge you don't pass on dies with you.

This card often signifies a large organization, office, or institution where rules are more important than personal opinion: in such cases, do not fight unnecessarily, but learn the language of the system, because a structure belonging to the sign of Taurus cannot be swept away by a single good idea.

The shadow, however, is real: when the form outlives the content, and everyone just keeps repeating that it has always been this way — then ask back, but out of respect, not rebellion, because a living system can handle questions, and only a dead one takes offense.

And the other shadow is the eternal student, who has been studying for twenty-five years because as long as they study, they don't have to do anything.

Today, ask someone who truly knows.

You don't have to figure everything out by yourself.

I know this is hard to accept, because throughout your career you've been told to find your own way, to listen to no one, and that you'll solve it yourself — and you took this so seriously that today you're even ashamed to ask, because what if it turned out you didn't know something.

This is your message today: what you are struggling with now has already happened to someone. Someone has already messed up in exactly the same way, someone has already burned their hand on the same handle, and someone has already learned what they should have done differently — and truth discovered by oneself is just as true, but it costs much more: years, money, and sometimes an entire enterprise.

So find someone who has already been where you are going, and ask them that one question you've been turning over in your mind for months — because not asking is not pride, but the most expensive tuition you can pay.

But perhaps this card speaks to you in reverse, and you are already the high priest, even if you don't call yourself that: there is someone near you who is now exactly where you were fifteen years ago, and who will step into the same pit you stepped into. Do not be silent, because the knowledge you do not pass on dies with you.

And notice that there are two keys, crossed: more than one path leads to the same place. If someone tells you that there is only one correct way to do what you are doing, and it happens to be theirs, do not accept advice from them.

In the reversed position, the form has outlived the content: the rule remains, but no one remembers why it exists anymore — in such cases, ask back, out of respect, because a living system can handle questions, and only the dead take offense.
