The Card's Image and Symbolism

A young person stands on the edge of a cliff, their face lifted towards the sun, while their foot is barely an inch from the point where the solid ground ends, and where the abyss yawns beneath, which they do not even look at. A very small bundle swings on a stick over their shoulder, containing all they possess in the world, and in their hand, they hold a white rose, not a sword or a purse. Beside them, a small white dog jumps upwards, very close to their feet, as if trying to tell them something they do not hear.

And pay close attention to the number on this card, because it is the first card of the deck, yet it is not one, but zero.

The Zero, which comes before numbers

Zero, strictly speaking, is not even a number, but the state from which numbers begin, and precisely for this reason, it has no weight, no place in the sequence; it belongs neither forward nor backward, but you can place it anywhere without spoiling anything.

This is why the Fool can move freely in this deck, for they are the only figure who is not tied down anywhere: they have no past to explain, no position to defend, and no reputation to lose.

If this card has come to you now, then in the matter you are thinking about, and which you fear, you are also nobody yet — and however strange it sounds, this is precisely your greatest freedom, for he who is nobody yet can become anyone, while he who is already somebody moves much more reluctantly, because he fears what he has become.

The Cliff, where there is no guarantee

Look at their foot in the picture, which is an inch from the edge, then look at their face, which is calm: they are not terrified, nor are they deliberating, they are simply looking upwards.

Most people here would say that this person is careless, yet this card is not about carelessness, but about the uncomfortable truth that there is no important step in life that can be taken in complete safety.

Just think about it: every single thing that ever mattered to you began on such an edge — when you first told someone you loved them, when you quit your job, when you moved into a new place, and even when you were born, and you couldn't have known beforehand what would come of any of it.

The Fool is therefore not foolish; they merely differ from others in that they do not lie to themselves that a guarantee exists, while the majority only feel safe because they do not look down.

The White Rose, which sets a standard

They hold a white rose in their hand, and this flower is a sign of pure intention, meaning that this person does not set out to prove anything to anyone, but simply because they want to go.

This is your standard tonight: for whom is the step you are preparing for truly intended? Because if there is even a drop of "they'll see" in it, then that is no longer the Fool's path, but revenge, just in prettier clothes.

The Dog, who makes the same sound

Beside their feet, the little white dog jumps, and this detail is usually interpreted in two ways, both of which are true: according to one, the dog warns, barks, and pulls back, because it is the loyal instinct that says, "look down already"; according to the other, however, the dog accompanies you, and jumps so enthusiastically because it senses that you are finally setting off.

In this duality lies the deepest teaching of this card, because the same inner voice can be caution and it can be fear, and you must decide which one is speaking now — for he who always listens to the dog will never set off, and he who never listens to it will sooner or later fall.

The Bundle, which is ridiculously small

Finally, look at that bundle on the stick, because that is all they have, and he who carries little goes fast.

For this card often does not convey that you need more preparation, but precisely that you need fewer burdens: fewer old stories, fewer grievances, fewer explanations about why it cannot be done.

The Shadow, which is quieter than you'd think

In a reversed position, this card can signify true recklessness, when someone jumps without even looking into what — but much more common is the other variant, which no one talks about: that you don't jump, but have been standing on the same edge for months, preparing, reading, planning, asking, which from the outside looks like caution, but in reality means you are growing old on the edge.

If this card has come to you now

You know what the step is, I don't need to explain, and this card doesn't ask you to throw everything away, but merely asks for a single step, the first one — because the truth is, you will never be more prepared than you are now, only older.
