The Image and Symbolism of the Card

And notice the most important thing: it does not stand still. This card does not depict a state, but a movement that is currently in progress.

The Name Lies

Let's state it immediately, because the Hungarian name misleads: the word "temperance" suggests renunciation — less wine, less food, less joy, a tight-lipped expression.

On this card, however, no one renounces anything. The angel does not take away: it mixes.

The original word, temperantia, means: to mix in the right proportion. It's the same word used to temper steel — tempering is not about giving less heat to the metal, but precisely enough to make it strong.

So this card is not about living less. It's about living in good proportion.

Water Between Two Chalices

Look closely at the two chalices, and look at the stream of water connecting them: that water flows at an angle that shouldn't be possible.

It doesn't fall straight down, as gravity would dictate — it arches between the two chalices.

This is the quiet miracle of this card: there are things that work when, according to the rules, they shouldn't, and this almost always comes from patience. For patience is not idleness, but the force that carries water upwards.

One Foot in the Water, the Other on Dry Land

This card's most accurate teaching about balance is not what you would expect.

The angel does not stand in the middle, between two identical things, cautiously. One foot is in the unconscious, under the water, the other on solid ground — meaning it lives in two worlds at once, and renounces neither.

Balance is not about standing in the middle and not moving. Balance is about being able to handle both: the deep and the everyday.

He who stands only on the earth dries up. He who stands only in the water drowns.

The Angel is Neither Male Nor Female

Observe its form: you cannot tell. And this is no accident — this card is precisely about things that do not need to be separated.

On the Lovers card, there were still two separate figures, with two separate viewpoints. Here, there is one figure, and both are contained within it.

This is maturation: when the opposing forces within you no longer fight, but blend together.

The Path and the Crown

Behind its back, a path leads between two mountains, and above the mountains, a golden crown glows.

Meaning there is somewhere to go, and it is visible. You just won't get there today.

This card is the only one in the deck that does not rush you: it does not tell you to rush off, but that the path leads between the two mountains, and you must go slowly on it.

The Sun Disk and the Irises

A sun disk shines on its forehead, and yellow irises bloom beside its feet — and these two small details together say something.

The iris is the flower of the goddess Iris, of the rainbow, who brings messages from the heavens down to earth: she does exactly what the angel does with the two chalices — connecting two worlds that shouldn't be connected.

And notice where they grow: on the waterfront, where the two elements meet. Nothing grows where everything is the same. Life is always on the border.

Sagittarius and the Number Fourteen

Sagittarius is the sign of the archer, who aims — and archery is the only sport where impatience is immediately visible in the hit.

And fourteen comes directly after Death: first something ends, then healing comes — and healing is never a single movement, but a thousand small, boring movements that no one sees.

The Shadow

In a reversed position, extremism is at work: either all or nothing. This person starts a new life on Monday, gives up on Thursday, and does both with a full heart.

The second shadow is impatience: you're not going in the wrong direction, you just can't wait until it arrives. And that's precisely what makes it wrong.

And the third is false balance: someone who stands not in the middle, but nowhere — takes no risks to avoid having to, and calls this peace.
