The Image and Symbolism of the Card

An archangel leans out from the clouds and blows a trumpet — traditionally, it is Gabriel, the messenger — a white flag flutters from his horn, bearing a red cross with all four arms of equal length.

Below, open coffins drift on the water, and grey figures emerge from them: a man, a woman, and between them a child, who stands with their back to us, looking upwards. Their arms are open. Mountains are in the background.

And now, observe the most important detail, for the entire card hinges on this: no one is judging in this image.

No Judge Here

Look closely at what is not on the card: there is no scale, no sword, no book, no list, no judgment, no verdict.

On the Justice card, there was still the scale and the double-edged sword, and that figure looked directly at you. Here, there is nothing of the sort.

Only one thing is happening: a voice speaks, and people rise.

Therefore, the Hungarian name of this card is misleading. It is not that you are condemned — but that you are called. And the difference is enormous: judgment closes something about you, while the call opens something within you.

The Coffins Are Open

And now, the quietest detail of the card: no one forces open the coffins.

They are open, and people rise from them of their own accord. There is no hand to pull them out, no rope, no violence.

The archangel does not pull anyone out. He just blows.

This is the complete mechanism of this card: the call is not coercion. You can heed it, or you can lie back down — both are free choices. Just know that you heard it.

Because once you have heard something, you cannot unhear it.

The Sound, Not the Image

This is the only card in the deck that is about sound.

All other cards involve looking: the Sun looks at you, the Moon does not look at you, the Hermit looks downwards, Justice looks into your eyes. Here, however, there is sound — and sound cannot be shut out.

You can close your eyes if you don't want to see something. You cannot close your ears.

This is why this card usually appears when someone has known for months that they are being called, and they pretend not to hear.

Grey Figures

The people are grey: neither living nor dead — the in-between color.

This is what a person looks like who is not sick and not unhappy, but simply hasn't felt anything for years. Someone who functions. Someone who gets things done. Someone who doesn't complain.

This card does not come to the suffering. It comes to the grey ones.

The Child Stands with Their Back Turned

Between the man and the woman stands a child, with their back to us, looking upwards.

One card earlier, on the Sun card, this same child sat on the white horse, naked, with a flag, facing us. Here, they turn their back to us because they are not looking at us.

This card is not about the audience. There are things you do not do to be seen.

The Cross on the Flag

On the flag is a red cross, and all four arms are equal: this is not the cross on which someone suffers, but one that points in four directions at once.

North, south, east, west. It does not tell you where to go — it tells you that it no longer matters which way you start, once you have risen.

The Water Beneath Them

The coffins drift on water: water represents emotions, memory, the unconscious.

This means that what you were lying in until now was not solid ground. It drifted. And you thought you were standing still.

The Mountains in the Background

In the background stand the mountains — the same snowy ridge on top of which the Hermit stood with a lamp in his hand, holding it out into the darkness.

He was the one who went up and shone a light for those who were still coming.

Now the trumpet sounds, and the grey people rise. Perhaps that is why the lamp was out all night.

Pluto and the Twenty

Pluto brings things forth from the depths and does not ask if you want them: this planet does not mend, but transforms.

And the twenty is the penultimate number: the World is already at the threshold. But first, you must rise.

The Shadow

In a reversed position, self-blame is at work: someone who judges themselves is doing the very thing this card is not — placing a judge where there is only a call.

The second shadow is the unheard call: you hear it, and you turn it down. You create noise around it. You busy yourself.

And the third is endless preparation: someone who will always get up tomorrow. The trumpet does not sound twice as loud.

And do not judge yourself in the process: no one judges on this card. A voice simply sounds, and someone rises.
