The Image and Symbolism of the Card

And observe the most important thing: he is looking downwards. He has reached the summit, and he is not looking at the sky, but at the path he came from.

Someone Finally Climbed the Mountain

On The Lovers card, a solitary mountain stood in the background, and it was also there on The Strength card, and in both cases, its purpose was for no one to look at it.

Here, however, someone stands on its top.

This entire card in a single sentence: the mountain you have been avoiding for years is climbable — but it cannot be done with company, it cannot be done quickly, and it cannot be done in a way that everyone sees.

The Lantern with a Star

Look closely at the lantern, because no flame burns in it, but a six-pointed star: the light it carries is not its own — he merely carried it with him, just as others carry water.

And notice how small that light is. It does not illuminate the mountain, it does not show the way to the valley; one can only see two steps ahead with it.

This is one of the most difficult teachings of this card, because it conveys that you will not receive the map — you only get as much light as is needed for the next step, and whoever does not set off until they see the end will never set off.

Think about what this means in practice: you don't need to know where you are going to arrive, only where you are placing your foot now. For no one reaches the mountain top by seeing the summit — but by going upwards a few thousand times in two steps of light.

Holding it Outward

And now look at his hand: he does not pull the lantern towards himself to see better, but holds it forward, outward, into the darkness.

This does not illuminate for himself. This is a beacon: someone else is coming from below, and he knows they are coming, because he too came once.

That is why this card is not sad, although it appears so — the hermit did not hide from the world, but went ahead, and now he shines a light.

The Grey Cowl

The Emperor wore a purple cloak with armor underneath, the hero of The Chariot stood in gleaming armor, the woman of The Strength in white clothes — and this old man stands in a grey cowl: no color, no rank, no insignia, nothing.

And this is not poverty, but a choice, because whoever goes up the mountain has no one to show off to — and whoever shows off to no one for years, slowly sheds everything that is not truly themselves.

Moreover, the hood partially covers his face: this man does not want to be recognized. He did not go up there for his name.

Solitude and Loneliness

There is a difference here that is worth knowing precisely: one chooses solitude, while loneliness happens to them.

This old man chose it. He turned his back on the city, just like the hero of The Chariot, only he did not leave in a chariot, but on foot, and he did not return.

If you now feel that you need to withdraw a little, then this is not an escape, but work: silence is not emptiness, but the place where you can finally hear.

The Snow and the Staff

Nothing grows up there, and this is the price of this card: the air is clear at high altitudes, but it is cold, and there is no one to share the view with.

And the staff he leans on is not an ornament: he has walked this path, and not unscathed. Wisdom does not come from thinking a lot — but from having something to think about.

Virgo and the Nine

The sign of Virgo is about discernment: the hermit does not know more than others, he just knows better how to separate what is important from what is not.

And the nine is the number of maturation, the last step before completion — and this step must always be taken alone.

The Shadow

In a reversed position, withdrawal becomes isolation: you are no longer alone to hear, but because you have grown accustomed to it, and slowly you perceive every call as a burden.

The second shadow is when you turn the lantern towards yourself, and only illuminate your own faults with it — this is not self-examination, but an interrogation.

And the third is the person stuck on the mountaintop: who went up, saw it, and did not come down to tell anyone.
