The Image and Symbolism of the Card
A woman sits on a stone bench, a white blindfold over her eyes. She holds two swords crossed before her chest, both with equal strength. Behind her is the sea, with rocks on the water's surface, and a thin crescent moon above their heads. Everything is still.
This card is an image of time stopped. Nothing is happening – and that is precisely what is happening. The woman is not walking, not putting anything down, not looking. She is just holding. Two swords, which she has not let go of for a long time, because as soon as she would put one down, she would have made a decision.
The blindfold over her eyes is the most important detail. She is not blind – she just isn't looking. She tied it herself. And this is not weakness: it is protection. Some things are easier not to see, because once you see something, you have to do something about it.
The Choice That Does Not Pass
The Two of Swords is not about a difficult decision. A difficult decision can be made. This card is about when you don't make the decision – and you believe that by doing so, you have gained time.
But there is no such thing as not deciding. Procrastination is also a decision, only you don't make it; time makes it for you. Every day you spend sitting on the bench quietly decides something.
When this card appears, it often indicates: something has been pending within you for a long time. You know what it is. You don't need to search for it.
The Weight of the Two Swords
The arms crossed before the heart. This is no accident: the two swords block the heart. As long as you hold both, nothing can enter or exit.
This is the price of the stalemate. It's not that you're not moving forward – but that you're not feeling anything in the process. The mind argues, and the heart remains closed. And the Two of Swords hurts precisely because it appears calm from the outside. But from the inside, holding two swords is exhausting. For months. For years.
The Water Behind Her
The sea is behind her, but she does not look at it. Water represents emotions – the knowledge that does not consist of arguments. The secret of the card is precisely this: the mind will not decide here. The two arguments have equal weight, which is why there is a stalemate.
The answer does not come from further deliberation. It comes from what you don't want to look at.
The Crescent Moon
The thin moon is post-new moon: something is just beginning. The moon is the light of intuition – faint, but present. This card does not tell you that you are in the wrong place. It tells you that the break is over.
The Bench You Are Sitting On
The stone bench is uncomfortable, yet you are sitting on it. This is the most honest detail on the entire card. A stalemate is never pleasant – only safe. As long as you sit, you cannot make a mistake. As long as you don't choose, theoretically both lives are yours: the one you would live and the one you imagine. This is the secret reward of not deciding, and that's why it's so hard to get up.
But not making a mistake is not the same as living. And the bench is not home. It's just a stop.
What the Card Truly Asks
Not that you make the right decision. But that you make a decision. The Two of Swords does not promise that you will choose the correct path – that is the business of the Aces and Sevens. This card only asks: get up from the bench and put down one of the swords.
Because as soon as you put it down, two things happen at once. One: you find out the price. The other: your heart opens, because finally it is holding nothing. And the second is worth more than the cost of the first.
